FAQ & Safety | Real Prison Penpals

Last updated: June 2025

This isn’t a cause, and it’s not content for clicks either.
It’s a space for people in prison to be seen, on their own terms. We post what’s submitted. Just real people reaching out in whatever way they can.

Q: What is Real Prison Penpals?
A: Real Prison Penpals is a third-party platform where incarcerated individuals (or their loved ones) can share videos, bios, and messages for the public to view. That’s it. There’s no messaging system included in our platform and no middleman.

Q: Why does this platform exist?
A: People inside are often overlooked. This platform gives them a small chance to be seen, heard, and maybe even written to. It’s about connection. Whether you’re here to write someone or just get a window into a different world, that choice is yours.

Q: Is this a dating site?
A: No. Some people may end up forming friendships or deeper connections, but that’s not what we’re offering. We just post the videos and bios. What happens after that is up to you, and them.

Q: Are these real people?
A: Yes. Everyone listed is currently incarcerated. We confirm their name, DOC number, and current charges through public records.

Q: How do I know it’s safe to reach out?
A: Like any new connection, go slow and use your judgment. We don’t monitor what happens after posting. If someone makes you uncomfortable, you can choose to disengage.

We don’t recommend sending money, gifts, or sensitive information until you’ve built trust over time.

Q: Do you screen the submissions?
A: Lightly. We check for the basics: DOC number, name, current charges, and that the content meets visibility standards (clear enough to post, no hate speech or illegal material).

Q: What kind of content is allowed?
A: Submissions must follow platform values. No hate speech, threats, impersonation, graphic violence, or exploitation. Anything violating these terms will be declined.

Q: Who gets featured?
A: Anyone whose content meets the basic posting standards. If they follow the rules and submit properly, they get listed. Occasionally, we highlight individuals for creative or thoughtful submissions.

Q: Who runs this site?
A: Real Prison Penpals is a civilian-run media project. We are not affiliated with any correctional institution or government agency.

Q: Are you making money off this?
A: We ask a fee to help cover platform costs like hosting, editing, and outreach. The goal is to keep the platform sustainable without compromising fairness.

Q: Can someone be removed from the site?
A: Yes, but only the inmate themselves or a verified loved one can request removal, based on documented safety concerns or clear lack of consent. We do not remove listings due to interpersonal conflict or personal regret.

Q: Can I submit someone I know?
A: Yes. Just make sure they’ve consented to being listed. By submitting, you’re confirming that they’re aware their profile will be public.

Q: How do I list someone?
A: Visit the “List an Inmate” page for instructions. You’ll need their DOC number, basic info, and a short bio or video. If you’re submitting on their behalf, make sure they’re okay with being posted.

Q: Will this show up publicly?
A: Yes. All submissions are public and may be shared on social platforms like TikTok or Instagram. The platform is built on visibility, so make sure whoever you’re submitting for is comfortable with that.
